70 years of the VW campervan

The original VW Transporter

The first VW Transporter

Last month marked the 70th anniversary of the first VW campervan launched at Earl’s Court in 1954.  The VW campervan quickly became an icon of freedom and adventure, symbolizing the spirit of the open road.

From beach getaways to mountain retreats, these campervans have created countless memories for generations of travellers. They embody a sense of community and exploration, making them beloved by families, artists, and wanderers alike.

During the ’60s, people involved in counterculture movements (the so-called Hippies), adopted the VW Transporter as a vehicle of choice. Over the years the VW transporter moved through T2, T3, T4, T5 and T6, changing forms a few times until it reached the modern day T7 looking nothing like the original.

Given this huge range of transporters, how do you decide which one is for you? The decision will likely come down to budget, although a T1 or T2 in excellent condition will perhaps set you back more than you might think.

If you’re looking to buy a VW Transporter a good starting point is this comprehensive buying guide from AP Autocare.

Or you may already be the proud owner of a campervan and you’re looking to restore, insulate or sound proof your van. You’ve come to the right place.

Happy travels!
